EAO group and UN’s IMEO host blinded methane release experiment in France

For more than a year, members of the EAO group have been planning the blinded methane controlled release experiment in Pau, France.

The blinded methane controlled release experiment was designed to rigorously test and evaluate the detection and quantification capabilities of a variety of academic and commercial technologies. In partnership with the UN’s International Methane Emission Observatory, this experiment brought together 13 different teams from all across Europe and North America in order to assess the ability of their platforms to accurately detect and estimate the emission rates of methane releases. The experiment took place at TotalEnergies’ TADI research facility in Lacq, France, and ran for a cumulative 4 weeks in June and September. Published results are expected in Winter/Spring 2025.
